The Art of Specialty Coffee: From Farm to Cup

The Art of Specialty Coffee: From Farm to Cup - Nut House

There's a moment, just before the first sip, when the aroma of a perfectly brewed coffee fills the room. It's earthy, floral, sometimes fruity — a quiet promise of what's to come. That moment doesn't happen by accident. It's the result of careful hands, precise processes, and an unwavering commitment to quality at every step of the journey.

What Makes Coffee 'Specialty'?

Specialty coffee isn't just a marketing term — it's a standard. To earn the label, coffee must score 80 points or above on a 100-point scale set by the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA). That score reflects everything: the altitude at which it was grown, the variety of the plant, the care taken during harvest, and the precision of the roast.

At Nut House, every coffee we stock meets this standard. We work with producers who treat their craft as an art form — from the sun-drenched hills of Colombia to the fertile farms of Brazil.

The Role of the Producer

Behind every exceptional cup is a farmer. Producers like Gildardo Lopez Hoyos in Colombia and Helisson Afonso da Silva in Brazil dedicate their lives to cultivating rare varieties — Pink Bourbon, Yellow Bourbon — with extraordinary care. When you buy specialty coffee, you're not just buying a product. You're supporting a person, a family, and a tradition.

Process Matters

How a coffee is processed after harvest dramatically shapes its flavour. A washed coffee — like our Colombian Pink Bourbon — is clean, bright, and precise, letting the natural character of the bean shine through. A natural process — like our Brazilian Yellow Bourbon Espresso — allows the fruit to dry around the bean, imparting sweetness and depth.

Neither is better. Both are extraordinary in their own right.

Brewing at Home

The good news? You don't need a café to experience world-class coffee. A simple pour-over, a French press, or a quality espresso machine at home is all it takes. The key is freshness — grind your beans just before brewing, use filtered water, and take your time.

Coffee rewards patience.
